Millburn Church has been blessed with many guests and visitors who are seeking a church home. To those who have been joining us regularly, please know that we’re honored by your presence, and that we’d like a chance to get to know you better. Please join us on Tuesday, April 28, at 7 p.m., for an introduction to Millburn Congregational UCC. Pastor Jed and others will be available to discuss how Millburn Church has nourished their spiritual journeys, and how it might do the same for you. If interested, please inform Pastor Jed on Sunday morning, or call the church office during the week. If this time is not convenient, we’ll be happy to make other arrangements. We plan to receive new members on Sunday, May 17 (Promotion Sunday). Christ’s Blessings!

The ROTATION MODEL will begin on February 1 with some exciting things happening as the children learn about Easter. They will review the events of Holy Week, learn about the symbol of the egg and play Easter egg games from around the world. They will also learn how Bermuda celebrates Easter and taste foods with a Slavic tradition. All of this continues through February 22. Thanks to teachers Cindy Batz, Janelle Cristianson, Karen Ende, Christina Garland, Lisa Katzenberger, Deborah and Joe Pineau and Cindy Rendl for making all of this possible.

Join us for a service of Tenebrae on Friday evening, April 10. Tenebrae involves the gradual extinguishing of lights as portions of the Gospel account of Jesus’ passion are read. The service includes music and a brief message. We’ll gather at 6:30 for a potluck soup, salad and bread supper, and then graduate to the sanctuary for the service. All are welcome.

Join us on five consecutive Thursday evenings, March 5, 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 7 p.m., for our 2009 Lent program, “First Light.” Wayne Nowack (retired pastor of Ivanhoe UCC and current Millburn Church member) will lead our discussion about the Historical Jesus based on a new DVD program. “First Light” features two of the world’s leading Jesus scholars, Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan, on location throughout Galilee and Jerusalem.
Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus? Why the tiny villages around the Lake? Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there?
Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus — Divine, Son of God, God from God, Lord, Redeemer, Liberator, and Savior of the World — taken from a Roman emperor on the Palatine hill and given to a Jewish peasant on the Palestine plain? Was it low lampoon or high treason? Either way, the Romans were not laughing.
What were the priorities of Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom? How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today?
Crossan writes, “It is all I have to say about Jesus after half a century of study–in succinct summary.”
Join us for fresh insights into the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Refreshments will be offered, and devotions will conclude each session.
